Lawrence County wrestlers unable to compete at state meet

By Josh Brown
Daily Record

Due to the rapidly growing concern over the coronavirus across the country, a half-dozen wrestlers from Lawrence County will miss out on the opportunity to compete at the state level.

Six local wrestlers across three different federations were set to compete in their respective state meets over the weekend, but concerns regarding the spread of COVID-19 brought all those tournaments to a halt.

"All of these young athletes had worked very hard to attain their goals this year and will lose their opportunity for the greater good of the health and safety of all the people in our nation who could have potentially been affected by a fatal virus if decisions were not made to do what is necessary to slow and hopefully stop its spread," coach Sam Hyre said.

Hyre - who oversees the Lawrenceville-Red Hill co-op high school wrestling team, the wrestling team at Parkview Junior High School - which is also co-oped with Red Hill and the Lawrence County Youth Wrestling Club - noted that Kyler Guercio was to compete in the Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation State Finals, while Hudson Meek, Dylan Aten and Dylan Camden were to compete at the IESA State Finals and high school wrestlers Shaina Hyre and Brianna Richey were to compete at the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Girls State Finals, but all of those events were cancelled.

"Kyler missed getting to compete at state in his final year of junior wrestling, but we are really looking forward to him moving up to the junior high team next year," Hyre said. "Hudson is just a fifth grader, so fortunately he has three more opportunities to get to compete at state. Dylan Aten - the best scrambler I have ever coached - will have to wait until next year to take his talents to DeKalb. Dylan Camden was most likely robbed of a chance to place at state this year. As a seventh grader, he broke the school record for wins and had just two losses. I think most surely he would have placed. Bri narrowly missed on placing last year and was really looking forward to the chance to place this year. Shaina placed third last year and was the No. 1 seed this year, but also did not get a shot to place."

While Hyre and the wrestlers are awfully disappointed, he believes they will use it as motivation to come back stronger next season.

"I feel for all the kids all over the state who have worked so hard to reach their goals," Hyre said. "With hard work, I'm sure our wrestlers will be back next year to represent Lawrence County the way we all know they can."
