Two girls qualify for IWCOA state meet

Josh Brown
Daily Record

Three Lawrence County high school wrestlers competed in three separate tournaments over the weekend in an effort to reach the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association state tournament and two of them succeeded.

At the IWCOA Girls Sectional in Heyworth Sunday, Shaina Hyre won the 101-pound division to advance to state. She received a bye into the semifinals, then pinned Deer Creek-Mackinaw's Samantha Lauer in 2:25 and followed up with a pin of Normal West's Angel Bateson in 3:02 in the title match.

At the IWCOA Girls Sectional at Granite City Saturday, Brianna Richey only wrestled one match at 106 and came up short, losing to Glenwood's Breana Allen, 4-2, in the championship match, but still qualified for state by finishing second.

Meanwhile, Brian Seed competed in the Sectional at Heyworth Sunday and finished 2-2 at 160, falling one match short of advancing to state. Seed lost his first match via pin to Pontiac's Andrew McDormand, then won by decision over Tremont's T.J. Connor (7-5) and Peoria's Cedric Beckum (8-2) before losing by major decision to Monticello's Kaleb Reid, 13-2.

Hyre and Richey will compete in the IWCOA State Finals at the BOS Center in Springfield Saturday and Sunday.
