FS wrestlers compete at IWCOA Regional

By Josh Brown
Daily Record

MAHOMET - A trio of Lawrence County wrestlers competed in another round of postseason action over the weekend, as they took part in the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Freshman-Sophomore Regional Tournament.

The meet is part of a state series conducted by the IWCOA for freshman and sophomore wrestlers who did not qualify for the IHSA State Tournament.

The Lawrenceville-Red Hill co-op had three wrestlers compete Sunday in the meet at Mahomet, with all of them winning at least one match.

Top finisher for Lawrence County was Brianna Richey at 101 pounds, as she finished second with a 2-1 record. Richey pinned Cumberland's Henry Warfel in 2:26 to open her tournament run, then beat Pontiac's Chance Smith 7-2 in the semifinals before losing a 4-2 decision to Clinton's Isiah Reynolds in the championship match.

At 160, Brian Seed came in fourth with a 2-2 mark. Seed dropped an 8-3 decision to Pontiac's Andrew McDormand in his first match, then rebounded to pin Mt. Zion's Aiden Ledbetter in 2:12 and Ridgeview's William Carmichael in 2:43 before losing a 9-7 decision to Champaign Centennial's David Navarra in the third-place bout.

Also, Nathan Blackwell went 1-2 at 138 for Lawrence County. Blackwell scored a pin over Pontiac's Brady Donovan in 3:20 in his first match, then lost by technical fall to Clinton's Trevor Willis (15-0) and was pinned by Mt. Zion's Harrison Weter in 23 seconds to end his tournament run.

Both Richey and Seed qualified for Sectional competition at Heyworth this Sunday by finishing in the top-four of their weight class. However, Richey will be competing in the girls' tournament going forward, along with teammate Shaina Hyre. Their postseason begins with the Sunday's Sectional round.

Top-four finishers in each weight class at the Sectional will advance to the state tournament March 14-15 at the BOS Center in Springfield.
