Lawrence County's Young Leaders offer support during pandemic

By Crystal Wimberly

LAWRENCEVILLE - The Lawrence County Young Leaders have come together to aid locals during the global outbreak of the COVID-19 virus by providing a grocery delivery service to Lawrence County residents.

"We have over 30 volunteers participating with the Young Leaders," said Paige Langenhorst, Farm Bureau manager. "It is open to any local resident who needs assistance."

The grocery service is offered free of charge to any Lawrence County resident that is in need of help including senior citizens, those who are immuno-compromised or those with young children who wish to stay quarantined.

The Young Leaders will shop within Lawrence County to fill the shopping order based on supply availability. The group will be shopping for food and essential items only. The shopper will then deliver the groceries to one's home. Porch payment and drop-off will be utilized to stay within the guidelines of the social distancing order from Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker. Cash or check will be accepted for the grocery payment. So far, the group has made three different grocery runs.

Any tips given to the Young Leaders will directly assist funding for Lawrence County scholarships, 4-H grants and agriculture education.

In addition to the grocery deliveries, the Lawrence County Young Leaders are also assisting the Lawrenceville Senior Citizens Center with its meal delivery. The center recently switched from carry-out meals to strictly delivery. For more information on the senior citizens meal program, call 943-2177.
