Unit 10 meets amid school shut-down

By Barbara E. Allender

BRIDGEPORT - The Red Hill Unit 10 School Board met, as usual, for its monthly meeting on Thursday, March 19.

Many thoughts of appreciation were shared as the administration and board thanked the cooks, custodians, bus drivers, technology staff and teachers for all they have done during the unexpected closure.

A quarantine went into effect on Tuesday, March 17. While some schoolwork was given to grade school students on Monday, teachers planned out activities and assignments to be issued online via Google classroom with specific links for Accelerated Reading books and tests, Math and Language. Programs used at school were made accessible online for continued education.

The custodians have been cleaning and sanitizing the buildings. The transportation staff cleaned and sanitized the buses. The technology staff, as well, cleaned all district technology equipment and helped students and teachers with online activities.

Cooks are providing "Grab and Go" lunches to anyone 18 and under at Bridgeport Grade School and Sumner Attendance Center. As of this time, these are provided at no charge.

Looking ahead to next year, the calendar for the 2020-21 school year was approved by the board.

The Red Hill High School course descriptions for next year was also approved.

Repair and potential replacement of the northern roof section of Bridgeport Grade School was proposed. It was agreed to let bids for the work.

In employment matters, the board approved the hiring of Kaitlyn Lasswell and Jessica Benson as high school English teachers for the 2020-21 school year. Pam Varner was also hired as an 11-month jr./sr. high school custodian.
